Apple leads 10M tablet sales in Q4

Tablet manufacturers — led by Apple Inc.'s (Nasdaq:AAPL) iPad — shipped 10.1 million of the devices in the fourth quarter last year, analysts at International Data Corp. of Framingham, Mass., reported Thursday.

The volume more than doubled the 4.5 million shipped during the third quarter.

Apple led the way, but saw its market share slip to 73 percent from 93 percent in the third quarter, IDC researchers found. They said Samsung, with its Galaxy tab running the Android operating system from Google Inc. (Nasdaq:GOOG), offered the strongest competition.

The latest advance in the tablet wars is set for Friday, when Apple's iPad 2 hits stores.
