BA, Continental, AMR in Talks on Alliance, People Say |

American Airlines and British Airways Plc are in talks to broaden their Oneworld alliance to add Continental Airlines Inc. and seek antitrust immunity to set prices and schedules, people familiar with the talks said.
The airlines may create a joint venture as part of the expanded accord, said the people, who asked not to be named because talks are private. The arrangement wouldn't involve a merger between AMR Corp.'s American, the world's largest carrier, and Continental, the people said. U.S. law prohibits mergers with foreign airlines.
An antitrust exemption would help the trio compete against Delta Air Lines Inc. and Northwest Airlines Corp., which won U.S. approval this month to collaborate with Air France-KLM. Adding Continental would extend Oneworld's U.S. reach as Delta's purchase of Northwest creates the world's biggest airline. British Airways gained 6 percent in London trading, and shares of Continental and American rose yesterday.
