Faced with rising jet-fuel prices, U.S. airlines are confronting tricky choices between shrinking their networks and seizing growth opportunities.
Flying fewer flights was a winning response when oil prices shot to historic highs in 2008. But higher fares and stronger demand in the U.S. are tempting some carriers to grab for domestic market share by adding routes and seats.

.Three of the four airlines that reported first-quarter results Thursday fly predominantly in the U.S. market. Southwest Airlines Co., JetBlue Airways Corp., and Alaska Air Group Inc. posted profits and said they plan to keep growing this year—even though jet-fuel prices have climbed nearly 20% since the beginning of the year.
