Dollar adds to gains after Chicago PMI |

The U.S. dollar added to earlier gains on Wednesday after the Chicago purchasing managers index, which measures business activity in the region, improved in December, while many analysts expected a slight decline. The dollar index /quotes/comstock/11j!i:dxy0 (DXY 78.10, +0.27, +0.34%) , a measure of the greenback against a basket of major currencies, rose to 78.131 from a reading of 77.811 in late North American trade on Tuesday. The U.S. currency reached a two-month high versus the Japanese yen as fears of a potential bankruptcy filing by Japan Airlines and credit-agency concerns about the nation's fiscal outlook pressured the Japanese currency. The dollar rose to 92.51 yen, up from 92.01 yen on Tuesday.
