Applied Materials sees lower orders |

Shares of Applied Materials Inc. fell in premarket action Wednesday after the semiconductor company said orders in the fiscal third quarter could decline as much as 15%.
The forecast overshadowed the company's second-quarter results. Late Tuesday, Applied Materials reported net income was nearly unchanged from a year ago, while sales of chip-making equipment rose in light of stronger demand from makers of consumer electronics. The results topped Wall Street expectations.

But the world's largest provider of chip equipment is facing an order slowdown from makers of DRAM memory chips -- a key customer base -- and makers of electronic flat-panel displays.
